Maths

Back

At Excelsior Academy we have a seamless 5-year maths curriculum with the following objectives

  • To equip pupils with the maths and numeracy skills they will need as adults.

  • To develop pupils’ confidence and encourage a positive attitude towards mathematics.

  • To highlight the importance of mathematics in their own lives and to society.

  • To prepare students with problem solving skills for future learning.

  • To provide a strong mathematical foundation for students who wish to go on to study mathematics at a higher-level post-16

Aims of the Maths curriculum

By the time pupils leave they should be able;

  • To develop knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts in number, algebra, ratio, geometry and statistics.

  • To have the basic numeracy skills they will need as adults.

  • To have mathematical procedural fluency.

  • To acquire, select and apply mathematical techniques to solve problems

  • To reason mathematically, make deductions and inferences and draw conclusions

  • To understand, interpret and communicate mathematical information in a variety of forms appropriate to the information and context.

  • To retain the ‘meta-maths’ once they have left school and no longer recall the specifics and formulae: the knowledge and logic that is left behind.
