Our Approach
EC6
Excelsior Community 6th Form – EC6 is a school-based 6th form that specialises in Health and Business post 16 courses.
The strength of EC6 is its pastoral care and support where we recognise students are just out of school and need comprehensive pastoral support such as they received at school. We recognise our students need strong guidance as to their next steps and EC6 provides clear pathways for students to be able to successfully access post 18 education or employment.
Our specialism of Health, Sport and Business is linked to multiple opportunities in this employment field for our students beyond EC6 where they will contribute to the growth and success of our community.
At EC6, we ensure there is a pathway for all levels of ability, ranging from Level 1 up to A-Level. Our ‘pathway routes’ mean that students can study subjects that are either academic or vocational, or study a mix of both types of subject. Our curriculum pathway routes at Post 16 ensure that all students:
-
have suitable destination routes after finishing the courses
-
develop digital literacy skills
-
develop employability skills and have access to wider enrichment opportunities
Life Skills Curriculum
We ensure that all students working at Level 1 and 2 receive a life skills curriculum. After completing their one-year pathway, students will have the required skill sets to pursue employment routes or progress to Level 3 pathways. Careers coaching is also included at all levels within our weekly programme. This supplements our assembly programme, which includes encounters with employers as well as Further Education and Higher Education providers.
Pastoral Curriculum
Within our Post 16 pastoral curriculum, we also incorporate a thematic skills-based curriculum. This develops students’ independent study skills, as well as their understanding of world affairs and their Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education.
Enrichment Curriculum
We work with a range of external agencies in order to provide diverse, personalised enrichment opportunities for our students. Termly enrichment days also develop life skills such as First Aid and teamwork and include mock interviews with employers.
Cultural Capital Curriculum
Work-based learning, educational visits and guest speakers are all integral to enhancing the curriculum across our Level 3 and A-Level courses.
