Twelve students from Excelsior Academy's Engage provision have launched into the world of robotics and coding through the LEGO League, supported by RGS partnership manager Dr Steve Bunce.

Working in pairs, students are constructing motorised models and using block coding to make them move and respond in different ways. In the first session, they built rovers inspired by driverless aid vehicles used in war zones, programming them to travel across terrain and respond to simulated threats.

Over the coming weeks, each pair will design a different model and navigate a mapped terrain to solve a range of challenges. The sessions aim to help students:

  • Develop their coding skills
  • Understand how their models link to real-world problem-solving
  • Build patience, perseverance and resilience through troubleshooting
  • Enjoy the process and feel proud of what they create

“The students loved the first session. Their models were incredibly impressive and they were so proud of what they created. They had to work with such persistence to achieve their goals.”
